Gas detection and measurement
science for the energy sector
Who we are

Worldwide Field Operations
We are one of the few research groups able to deploy anywhere in the world and handle complex field logistics, routinely delivering projects on multiple continents each year. FluxLab provides the science, methods, and training required for modern methane oversight.
Partners rely on FluxLab for transparent data, rigorous technology validation, and independent guidance on monitoring, mitigation, and regulatory design. Our work spans diverse locations, bringing our expertise to a wide range of environments and projects.

Energy
FluxLab advances methane measurement science across the energy sector, primarily in Oil and Gas and Coal.
Our research focuses on developing innovative measurement methods, applying existing technologies in new ways, and improving the accuracy of emissions inventories.
Through field studies at both onshore and offshore oil and gas producing facilities, we generate the scientific evidence needed to better understand methane emissions and support effective emissions management, regulatory decision-making, and national methane reduction efforts.
Building on this expertise, FluxLab also leads SIMFLEX-COAL in Australia—the world's first controlled-release methane research facility for open-cut coal mines—to reliably advance emissions measurement technologies and scientific methods.
Landfills
Methane emissions from landfills are one of the largest sources of human-caused methane worldwide.
FluxLab conducts applied research to better understand how these emissions are generated, measured, and mitigated.
We work with municipalities, landfill operators, regulators, and technology developers and service providers to evaluate measurement technologies, improve emissions inventories, and develop practical, science-based approaches for landfill methane management.
Our goal is to advance reliable measurement methods that support more effective climate action and operational decision-making in Canada and beyond.
Artic
FluxLab has conducted methane and greenhouse gas research in Arctic and other cold-region environments for more than 15 years.
Our work focuses on understanding how climate change is influencing greenhouse gas emissions from permafrost, tundra, wetlands, and other northern ecosystems through long-term field measurements, sensor development, and ecosystem-scale monitoring.
By combining innovative measurement technologies with field research in some of the world's most challenging environments, we help improve scientific understanding of natural methane emissions and provide the data needed to strengthen climate models and inform international climate policy.
Technology
FluxLab develops technologies and scientific methods that make more accurate methane measurement possible.
Our team designs and builds novel sensing systems, automated measurement platforms, and field instrumentation, while advancing new analytical approaches through applied research.
We hold multiple patents, have helped commercialize methane measurement technologies, and continue to develop next-generation tools—including our compact methane sensor platform—for applications across the energy, waste, and environmental sectors.
By combining engineering, software, and field validation, we transform scientific innovation into practical solutions that improve methane measurement worldwide.
SIMFLEX
Simulation Facilities for Emissions Experiments (SIMFLEX) is FluxLab's controlled-release research platform for evaluating methane detection and quantification technologies.
By releasing known quantities of methane under carefully controlled conditions, SIMFLEX provides an independent environment where researchers, technology developers, regulators, and industry can objectively evaluate the accuracy, strengths, and limitations of measurement systems.
These unique facilities enable fair comparisons across technologies, support the development of open scientific methods, and accelerate innovation in methane measurement through collaborative research and international partnerships.
